TMJ Arthrocentesis

TMJ Arthrocentesis

TMJ arthrocentesis is a minimally invasive procedure that irrigates the upper joint space to reduce inflammatory mediators and release minor adhesions.

It is commonly considered when non-surgical treatment has not provided adequate relief and symptoms include pain, restricted opening, or intermittent locking.

Arthrocentesis is often an intermediate step between conservative therapy and open joint surgery.

You may be a candidate if you have:

  • Persistent TMJ pain despite conservative treatment
  • Limited opening related to joint dysfunction
  • Joint symptoms suggestive of internal derangement
  • A clinical profile appropriate for minimally invasive intervention

Procedure Overview

After local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia, small-access needles are placed into the joint space.

Sterile irrigation is performed to flush inflammatory byproducts and improve intra-articular movement.

In selected cases, adjunctive intra-articular medication may be considered based on diagnosis and surgeon judgment.

What to Expect

Step 1

Pre-Procedure Evaluation

We confirm diagnosis, review prior conservative treatment, and determine whether arthrocentesis is appropriate.

Step 2

Procedure Day

The procedure is performed with minimally invasive access and no large incisions.

Step 3

Early Recovery

Most patients resume light activity quickly, with a structured home program for mobility and symptom control.

Frequently Asked Questions
