TMJ Disorders
The temporomandibular joints connect the lower jaw to the skull and support speaking, chewing, and jaw movement. TMJ disorders can include muscle-related pain, intra-articular inflammation, disc displacement, and degenerative joint disease.
Many TMJ symptoms improve with conservative care. For this reason, treatment usually begins with non-surgical options and progresses based on diagnosis and response.
When symptoms persist or structural disease is present, procedural or surgical treatment may be appropriate.
You should be evaluated if you have:
- Persistent jaw pain, clicking, or locking
- Limited mouth opening or painful jaw movement
- Bite changes that developed with joint symptoms
- Symptoms that continue despite conservative treatment
Stepwise, Diagnosis-Driven Care
We do not default to surgery. Management starts with a careful diagnosis and a least-invasive-first strategy.
Surgical options are reserved for defined indications such as refractory internal derangement, structural degeneration, or end-stage joint disease.
Treatment Spectrum
Conservative care may include behavioral modification, medication, splint therapy, and physical therapy depending on diagnosis.
If symptoms persist, minimally invasive options such as arthrocentesis may be considered for selected joint conditions.
For advanced destructive joint pathology, open joint procedures or total joint replacement may be recommended.
Your TMJ Care Path
Comprehensive Evaluation
We assess symptoms, function, exam findings, and imaging to identify the primary pain and dysfunction drivers.
Conservative Management
First-line care is initiated and monitored for measurable improvement.
Procedural Escalation If Needed
If conservative care is insufficient, we discuss minimally invasive or surgical options based on your specific diagnosis.
Long-Term Follow-Up
We continue monitoring pain, function, and recurrence risk to support durable outcomes.
